Things to Do Instead of Doomscrolling Tonight

Things to Do Instead of Doomscrolling Tonight

You were only going to check one thing. Then somehow it’s 47 minutes later, you know far too much about a stranger’s relationship drama, you’ve watched someone reorganize a refrigerator you’ll never see again, and you’re halfway through the comments on a video you don’t even care about.

We’ve all been there. Doomscrolling has a sneaky way of filling the exact moments when we’re too tired to do something productive but not quite ready to go to sleep. And while there’s nothing wrong with enjoying TikTok, Instagram or whatever corner of the internet currently has your attention, sometimes you put your phone down and realize you don’t actually feel rested.

So tonight, we’re proposing something different. Not a dramatic digital detox. Not putting your phone in a locked box. Not waking up tomorrow and becoming someone who meditates for an hour before sunrise. Just doing something else for a little while.

Take the everything shower you keep postponing

You know the one. The shower where you actually wash your hair instead of negotiating whether it can survive another day. The one where you exfoliate, use the products you usually save for when you “have more time,” put on clean pajamas afterward and emerge feeling approximately 70 percent more capable of handling life.

Put your phone somewhere you can’t reach it, turn on music and take your time. Then give your face the same treatment. Bonus points for fresh pajamas and freshly washed sheets.

Read ten pages, not an entire book

One reason scrolling wins so often is that everything else sounds like effort. “Read a book” somehow becomes “become a person who reads 50 books a year.” No. Read ten pages. That’s it.

Pick up the book that has been sitting beside your bed for three months. Read a magazine. Revisit something you loved years ago. Read essays, short stories or a ridiculous celebrity memoir. The goal isn’t self-improvement. It’s giving your brain something to focus on that isn’t designed to make you swipe again every seven seconds.
You might stop after ten pages. You might accidentally read 40. Both count.

Turn your skincare into the activity

There’s doing your skincare, and then there’s doing your skincare like you have nowhere else to be. Tonight, try the second one.

Tie your hair back and wash your face properly. Sweep on Perfect Facial Toner and actually let it settle. Massage Perfect Light Facial Cream into your skin instead of applying it while simultaneously watching another video.
Look at your skin without immediately searching for something that needs fixing. There’s something surprisingly grounding about turning a routine you normally rush through into ten quiet minutes of care.

Call the friend you keep sending memes to

We love sending our friends videos that say exactly what we could have said ourselves. But sometimes the actual conversation is better.
Call her. Not because something happened or because you need advice. Ask what she had for dinner. Get the update on the tiny work drama nobody else would understand. Tell her the story that was too long to type.
There’s a particular kind of comfort in hearing someone you love laugh in real time that a reaction emoji simply cannot recreate.

Organize one tiny corner of your life

Important emphasis on tiny. We are not suggesting you reorganize your entire apartment at 9:34 p.m.

Choose one drawer. Your handbag. Your bedside table. Or your beauty drawer. Throw away anything empty, clean your brushes and Perfect Blender, wipe down your compacts and put the products you actually use somewhere easy to reach. If your cushion is running low, pop in a Cushion Refill so tomorrow-you doesn't discover an empty compact five minutes before leaving.

Then stop. The satisfaction comes from finishing one small thing, not accidentally beginning a three-hour organization project.

Make something unnecessarily nice

You know how you'll happily make a friend a beautiful drink when she visits but pour your own into whatever glass happens to be closest? Tonight, make yours properly.
Tea in the nice mug. Sparkling water with ice and lemon. Hot chocolate with everything. Fruit cut up and put onto an actual plate instead of eaten over the kitchen counter. Make dessert if you feel like it.

Not because you earned it. Not because today was particularly difficult. Just because making yourself something lovely is reason enough.

Get ready for absolutely nowhere

If getting ready is something you genuinely enjoy, why should it only happen when someone else is going to see you?

Put on music and play. Try the eyeliner look you've been too nervous to attempt ten minutes before leaving the house. Experiment with Perfect Eyeliner when there is absolutely no consequence if both sides turn out completely different. See how little Glow Compact Foundation you can use while still getting the finish you like.
Then wash it all off if you want. Beauty can be play. It doesn't always have to be preparation.

Watch something you actually chose

There’s a difference between watching something and being fed content until an hour disappears.

Choose a movie. Pick one episode of the show you've been meaning to start. Rewatch the comfort movie you could practically recite. Make popcorn, turn the lights down and put your phone somewhere that requires you to physically stand up to retrieve it.
There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned about watching one complete story from beginning to end.

Give tomorrow-you one tiny gift

Put your coffee cup out. Choose what you're wearing. Fill your water bottle. Put the things you need beside the door. Set your Compact Cushion & Refill somewhere you'll see it if tomorrow is going to be one of those five-minute-makeup mornings.
The point isn't productivity. It's doing one tiny thing tonight that makes tomorrow feel easier.

And sometimes the best gift is even simpler: go to bed. You don’t have to reach an arbitrary hour before you’re “allowed” to call it a night. Wash your face, moisturize, make the room comfortable and get under the covers. The internet will still be there tomorrow.

Your evening doesn't have to be productive to be worthwhile

There’s a strange pressure to use screen-free time exceptionally well. Read something educational. Exercise. Meal prep. Organize. Improve yourself. But replacing doomscrolling with another obligation misses the point.

You can spend twenty minutes listening to an album from beginning to end. Paint your nails badly. Call your mom. Do your skincare. Make cinnamon toast at 10 p.m. Stare out the window. Be bored for a minute.

The goal isn't to create the perfect evening routine. It's to remember that your attention belongs to you.

So the next time your thumb has been scrolling for so long that you can't remember why you picked up your phone, consider this your cue. Put it down, choose something that actually sounds good, and give yourself the rest of the night back.

A Little Less Scrolling, A Little More You

Your nighttime routine doesn't need to be complicated to feel good. Whether tonight involves a book, a long phone call, fresh sheets or ten quiet minutes at the bathroom sink, choose something that leaves you feeling better than when you started.

If a beauty reset is part of your version of switching off, Shop All Lava Art products and build a routine around the products you genuinely enjoy using. And if tomorrow happens to be a makeup day, take the Color Match Quiz to find your perfect foundation match.
